Axe Estuary reserves

The lower Axe valley is fast developing as one of the best places to see birds in East Devon.  This will be an all-day visit, taking in Seaton Marshes, Colyford Common and Black Hole Marsh.  Meet at Colyford Memorial Hall (SY248924) at 9.30am.  

Toilets in Seaton.

Bring packed lunch.

Greylake

A morning visit to this recently-opened RSPB reserve, where we expect to see ducks and wading birds, with a good chance of a Peregrine or other raptors.
Meet at 10.00 at Greylake reserve entrance on A361, between Othery and Greinton (ST399346)

Exminster Marshes

Morning field trip for birds on the marshes and estuary.  We may also catch some early winter thrushes.

Meet at RSPB car park (SX953872) at 9.30am.

Wembury

Most of the land at Wembury Point was acquired by the National Trust in 2006.  We will walk around Wembury Point looking for seabirds, waders and farmland birds.  After lunch, we’ll probably walk the coast path towards the Yealm estuary.

Meet for car sharing at 8.30 am (please check new meeting place) or 9.30 am in National Trust car park by Wembury beach and Marine Centre (SX518483).  

Toilets near car park.  Possible car park charge.

A morning walk by the Otter river, including seaside and farmland birds.

Dawlish Warren

A morning walk to see waders and sea birds at Dawlish Warren.  High tide in late morning should bring the birds in close to the hide.

Meet in car park (north end, near nature reserve, SX981786) at 9.30 am.

Coach trip to Slimbridge

It’s nearly 3 years since our last trip to the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust’s headquarters. At Slimbridge we can see a variety of exotic wildfowl as well as wintering flocks of wild ducks, geese and swans.

Bring packed lunch or eat at the visitor centre restaurant.
Must be pre-booked.

Depart Exeter bus station 8.30 am, return to Exeter about 7.00 pm.
Cost: £16.00 for coach journey, plus £8.30 admission (£6.40 concessions, or free for WWT members).

Morning field trip to see ducks and waders on the Exe estuary.

Winter Wildfowl at West Sedgemoor

A guided moring visit to RSPB West Sedgemoor nature reserve. We should see ducks and waders in their thousands, including Wigeon ,Teal, Shoveler, Pintail, Lapwing and Golden Plover.  There will be an option to continue with an informal visit to another site on the Somerset levels in the afternoon.  Limited numbers.

Must be pre-booked.

Clennon Valley and Goodrington Sands

Morning field meeting in search of water birds and winter migrants.  All sorts of birds have been known to turn up in the Clennon Valley - for example a Penduline Tit was there a couple of years ago.

Meet at 10.00 am Goodrington Sands sea front (SX893595).

Possible car park charge (limited free parking may be available).

Keith and Linda Offord will be leading this weekend trip to the Dee Estuary.  We will be based at the Mollington Banastre hotel, near Chester, and travel to birdwatching sites in minibuses driven by the leaders.

Steps Bridge and Dunsford Woods

Morning field trip to look for woodland and riverside birds along the upper Teign valley.  At this time of year we hope to see the wild daffodils in flower, and perhaps we’ll be lucky again with the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker.

Meet at Steps Bridge car park (SX802882) at 9.30am.

No toilets
